Portrait photography is a form
of photography where the main aim is to capture the facial expression of the
subject. This kind of photography is considered to be good if the photographer
is successful in bringing out the personality and mood of the subject. For
taking portrait photographs, the focus is mainly on the subject and all other
things are kept out of focus. Any distracting thing in the background should be
kept away while taking such photographs, because that would take the focus away
from the subject. Blurring the background is a good option, when you only want
the emphasis to be on the subject.
For portrait photography, lighting is a
very important aspect and it has to be controlled properly. If no extra light
is added, then the subject should be positioned properly according to the light
available in that place. Many times, due to improper lighting, the photographs
do not look as good as they should look. So, for such photography, people
prefer studios where all equipments of lighting and other equipments are available.
This enables the photographer to experiment and create wonderful photographs.
Usually in portrait photography, the camera is
placed at eye level. The specialty of this photography is that it captures the
emotions and facial expression of the subject and highlights the best features
of the face. Portrait photographs are taken generally from head to bust, but
you can also opt for a whole body portrait where the focus is on the whole
body. In whole body portraiture, often props like beds, chairs, stands, etc are
included to enhance the positive features of other areas of the body.
This kind
of photography does not only mean that the subject has to be in a studio and
pose in front of the camera. The photo shoot can also be done in any location.
The kind of photography where you can capture your photographs in your home or
in any place other than the studio is known as lifestyle portrait photography. This kind of photography has become popular
now, because most people do not feel very comfortable in a studio and some of
them are also of the view that the photographs taken in a studio looks
repetitive.
If you do
not want your photographs to look staged, then you should opt for this kind of
photography. In lifestyle portrait photography, you can freely move in your
home and feel comfortable when the photographer takes your photographs. If you
are relaxed then your photographs will also be good. If you want your images to
look natural and happy, then nothing is better than this kind of photography.
Portrait photography, whether
done in studio or in any other location is a wonderful piece of art which you
can hang in the wall of your drawing room or bedroom or place on top of any
table or mantelpiece. if your photographer is good then you can expect to have
a wonderful portrait that would capture the beauty of the face and hide the
flaws.
